Bob Simon and I are on the same page....

Below is a paragraph taken from Robert Simon's blog (Creator of Reston). He wrote an entry on his beliefs about education. I could not agree more with his last paragraph. His website is www.simonnotsimple.com

"We should most certainly stop preaching that one must go to college to get a “decent job.” This is quite inappropriate in the USA where only 30% of the jobs require a college degree. The careers available to non-college degree holders range from farming to the service industry to the transportation industry, to building, to writing, to entertaining and to sports. If what is meant by a decent job is one that pays enough to support a decent standard of living, we fall far short as a nation in legislating that every full-time worker be paid a minimum wage sufficient to pay for a decent living. Our objective should be to produce high school graduates who can realistically decide whether to continue education in trade school, or in a two-year or four-year college or to go right into the job market—who will use every opportunity to exercise his/her right to vote with a familiarity of the issues debated by the candidates.

#5 - Back to the Future

Opinion: Internet and Education -- Back to the Future

- Came across this article from AOL news, not that I find AOL news all the great... This author is talking about the future of education and how much more needs to be invested in the idea of education being more on-one-on. Novel idea! Thoughts?

#4 Radio show about Blogging

During my never ending time at home this week, I frequent a blog called restonian.org, which I believe I mentioned in my first blog. Anyway, he was featured on a radio show this week about blogging during the blizzard. Three blog creators share with the host why they blog and what it means for their communities. I thought it fit perfectly into learning about blogs, and to give us some insight into why people blog. Enjoy!

#3 Internet blocking

Internet Blocking

Article above sort of hints upon what I was saying in the last post. What does internet blocking show about students and staff...that we don't trust them? Thoughts?

#2 Article on Copyright issues for schools

Came across this article on ISTE connect:

-"Schools in the 21st Century must contend with a variety of challenges stemming from the use of modern technologies in the classroom environment. This article focuses on two of the most prevalent issues faced by school administrators and teachers today–that of copyright compliance and protecting students from inappropriate web content."

Sometimes I get this feeling that schools are absolutely oblivious to copyright issues. Yes we have all been educated about copyright infringement. Do you actually know anyone who has been brought to court for this? No, I do not. It begins with educating adults (staff) and then students. If YOU as an educator cannot understand and follow copyright issues, how can your students?

The article talks about more stringent content policies, such as blocking websites and not allowing teachers and students access to content. I'm not sure I completely agree with that approach. Wouldn't it make sense to take the time to properly educate the staff and students not taking away content. This always comes up - the content itself is not bad, but one must understand how to use the content.

Currently I am a reader of a few fantastic blogs, such was www.restonian.org, - this blog is funny. I don't go one day without reading it. Anyway, maybe this is a bad example of a blog, we shall see!
